April is the last month of Phu Quoc’s dry season and the hottest of the year. The sea is still calm on the west coast and most days are sunny, but the heat builds, the first afternoon storms arrive towards the end of the month, and the jellyfish season begins. Two national holidays bring Vietnamese travellers in large numbers — in 2027, Hung Kings’ Day on Friday 16 April and the 30 April–1 May holiday — so the first half of April is the quieter, better-value time to come.

What April 2026 was like. The first half of the month was dry across An Giang province, and the hottest reading at the Phu Quoc station was 35.8 °C on 27 April (An Giang weather station). The rainy season then arrived later than usual: in May the station moved its forecast for the start of the rains to the middle of the month. In a typical year, expect hot, mostly dry days, with storms becoming more frequent in the last week of April.
The sea and jellyfish
- The west coast — Long Beach, Ong Lang — is usually still calm, and snorkelling around the An Thoi islands is good. Late in the month the first storms can stop boat trips for a day; see island-hopping tours.
- Jellyfish: the marine protected area names April to August as jellyfish season, with more of them at Ganh Dau, Cua Can, Bai Thom, Ham Ninh and An Thoi (Tuổi Trẻ News, May 2025). Swim where others are swimming, wear a rash vest if you are in the water for long, and see hospitals and medical care for first aid.
The holidays
| Holiday | 2027 |
|---|---|
| Hung Kings’ Commemoration Day | Friday 16 April (a three-day weekend) |
| Reunification Day and Labour Day | Friday 30 April and Saturday 1 May |
Hung Kings’ Day falls on the 10th day of the 3rd lunar month. For 30 April–1 May 2027, Tuổi Trẻ expects four days off, 30 April to 3 May; the government had not announced the schedule in October 2026.
The 30 April holiday is one of the busiest weekends of the year on Phu Quoc. Over the four-day holiday in 2026, the island received about 164,000 visitors (Báo Pháp Luật, May 2026); before it began, a regional hotel manager put bookings at four- and five-star hotels at 95%, and the fast ferries were almost sold out (Tuổi Trẻ, April 2026). One-way fares from Hanoi reached up to 4.8 million dong (VnExpress, April 2026). If you can, avoid the last days of April and the first days of May — or book flights, ferries and rooms well ahead.
What to do in April
- Beaches early and late: swim in the morning and late afternoon, and spend the middle of the day in the shade — see the best beaches.
- Water parks for the hottest afternoons: Aquatopia and the water park at VinWonders.
- Indoor and shade options — spas, cooking classes and markets: see things to do when it rains, which works for the heat too.
- Sunsets around 18:15 — see the best sunset spots.
Health
April is the hottest month: drink plenty of water, use sunscreen, wear a hat, and avoid long walks or hikes in the middle of the day. Mosquitoes become more active as the rains begin — use repellent.
For the months around it, see Phu Quoc in March and the month-by-month weather guide.
