“Carpe Diem” does not mean “fish of the day.”

Phu Quoc is known for its seafood and as such the Island is great for fishing as well. Some tourists actually come to Phu Quoc for a fishing holiday. On Phu Quoc Island you will find numerous tour operators that will take you fishing but if you really want to catch something big, you need to commission your own boat.

Organized Fishing Tours

Phu Quoc fishing tours are normally bundled in with the snorkeling tour of the southern islands. When you arrive at An Thoi Port, which is the gateway to the An Thoi Archipelago, and board the tour boat, your first stop will be at a nearby island to “fish”.

The aim here is for tourists to experience the sport of fishing and maybe catch a small fish and also for the tour operators to kill some time.

The tour operators will provide you with a small plastic reel with line wound around it and a metal hook and small weight at the end.

Squid is used as bait. “Fishing” involves throwing the baited line out as far as you can and then waiting for a fish to bite. If you have never fished before then you may enjoy this experience, just be careful when you are reeling your line back in as the fishing line may lacerate your fingers.

A woman on a boat holds a small fish she just caught, smiling at the camera. Other people are visible in the background, with the sea and a distant coastline.

Some people enjoy this, but real fishermen and women do not and are often left dissatisfied.

Fishing Opportunities on Phu Quoc

There are 4 types of fishing related activities that you can engage in here on Phu Quoc:

  1. Shore fishing – small fish
  2. Deep sea fishing – tuna, grouper, kingfish, cobia, snapper
  3. Night fishing – squid
  4. Fish pond fishing

Shore Fishing

The following are some spots where you can fish from shore on Phu Quoc Island:

1. Mũi Dinh Cậu / Duong Dong River

Duong Dong Town

The Duong Dong river mouth in Duong Dong Town is a great place to fish from shore at sunrise or sunset. Here you will see a lot of locals fishing as well. The key spots here are:

  1. End of North Long Beach;
  2. By the Dinh Cau Temple rocks;
  3. At the end of the Duong Dong pier;
  4. Along the Duong Dong riverside (see picture below).

2. Cua Can bridge

Cua Can Commune

The Cua Can River is a river that is easily accessible as it cuts through highway DT45 (Cua Can Road) which is a major road in Phu Quoc Island. You can fish right from the bridge here or by the river bank below. The area is also home to a few resorts and cafes where you can rest or fuel up afterwards.

3. Mui Ganh Dau

Ganh Dau Commune

Mui Ganh Dau & Ganh Dau Beach have a lot of corals close to shore where locals like to fish. You can fish from on top of the granite boulders located here. Just work your way down the beach and to the rock outcrop and cast your line.

4. An Thoi Port

An Thoi Town

Down south in Phu Quoc’s second largest town — An Thoi, you can fish from the pier along with the other locals. The best time to fish here is during sunset.

5. Ham Ninh Pier

Ham Ninh Commune

Ham Ninh’s long concrete pier was cut off from the shore in January 2020, when the authorities demolished the first 40 m as unsafe, so you can no longer walk out along it. Ask in the village where people fish from now. See Ham Ninh.

Deep Sea Fishing On Phu Quoc

Deep sea fishing in the Gulf of Thailand is an awesome experience. Here on Phu Quoc you will have the opportunity to catch king fish, tuna, snapper, cobia, and giant groupers.

Since deep sea fishing is not a popular tourist activity you will need to charter your own boat. Chartering an entire boat includes all bait, tackle, and food. You can also go to Duong Dong Port or An Thoi Port and privately commission your own boat which will save you a lot of money as rates are much cheaper when you are dealing with the boat owner directly.

Deep Sea Fishing Spots

Clearly the further out you go, the bigger fish you will catch. The Hon Thom Commune, which consists of numerous islands south of An Thoi Town, is a popular spot. The waters around Fingernail Island (Hon Mong Tay) are among the most fished.

Another popular spot is around Yellow Tortoise Island.

On the north-west coast, the bay off Vung Bau beach is also good.

Squid Fishing At Night

Fishing for squid at night is somewhat of a popular tourist activity on Phu Quoc. You can purchase tickets for this tour at any one of the tour operators found on the island for a modest price. This tour involves boarding a boat at Duong Dong harbor, watching the sun set, and having a light snack. Once the sun has set you begin to fish for squid. If you are prone to seasick, we suggest you take motion sickness pills before going on this tour. Prices for squid-fishing trips are in our island-hopping tours guide. The chances of you catching something are slim. If you do catch something you can keep the squid.

If you want a better night squid fishing experience with the chance of catching a larger squid then head over to An Thoi Port, Ganh Dau, or Thom Village and commission your own boat.

Phu Quoc Fish Farm

In Cua Duong Commune by the Duong Dong Dam and Duong Dong Lake there are a few stocked fish ponds where you can enjoy fishing in a garden like setting. There is no guarantee you will catch any fish though as the fish are well fed.

Bait & Tackle

Vietnamese love to fish so finding gear will not be difficult.

Where to buy tackle

If you are like us then you have probably packed your collapsible fishing rod with you. However if you have forgotten your rod and reel back home you can always purchase a new one at one of the many fishing equipment and supply stores in Duong Dong Town. There are a few shops selling fishing gear, line, and tackle at the Duong Dong Market and there is one sports fishing supply store selling gear on 30 Thang 4 Street. New shops open and close all the time, so please ask around.

What bait should I use and where can I buy it?

If you are fishing from shore then you can use small shrimp, snail meat, insects, or an artificial lure. If you are planning on going deep sea fishing then you can use squid or small fish as bait. You can purchase bait at the markets in Duong Dong Town. It’s hard to find “stink bait” and quality lures, so bring your own if you can. Just make sure to pack it in your luggage and not your carry on.

Fishing tours and charters

Fishing charters on Phu Quoc are small operations, and few have many Google reviews. Two with a track record (October 2026): Pacific Boat in Duong Dong (4.7 from 167 reviews) and Jerry’s Jungle Tours (fishing charters, 4.5 from 70). Whoever you book, agree the boat, the hours, the bait and tackle, and whether fuel and lunch are included before you pay — and ask whether you keep the catch.
