There is no direct boat between Phu Quoc and Cambodia. To go by land and sea, take the fast boat to Ha Tien, cross the border at Xa Xia – Prek Chak, and continue by minivan to Kep, Kampot or Phnom Penh. Through tickets cover the whole trip. Alternatively, fly: Air Cambodia flies Phnom Penh – Phu Quoc direct, and AirAsia Cambodia has flown Siem Reap – Phu Quoc. Coming back overland, you need a Vietnamese e-visa — the Phu Quoc visa exemption does not apply at the land border.
The ferry that is not running yet
A passenger ferry between Kampot and Phu Quoc has been announced several times since late 2024. In February 2026, Khmer Times reported that Cambodia had approved the plan in principle and that it was waiting for a decision from the Vietnamese side. In October 2026 the Kampot port’s own website still said there was “no boat or ferry yet” between Kampot and Phu Quoc. If you read that a ferry has “launched”, check the date — we found no service running, and none at all to Sihanoukville or Koh Rong.
By boat and bus via Ha Tien
The route most travellers use, Phu Quoc to Kampot:
- Phu Quoc → Ha Tien: fast boat from Bai Vong pier, about 1 hour 20 minutes, 216,000–226,000 dong (October 2026). See ferries.
- Ha Tien → the border: the Xa Xia gate is 7–8 km from Ha Tien, 10–15 minutes by taxi or Grab.
- The border: leave Vietnam at Xa Xia, walk across, and enter Cambodia at Prek Chak.
- Prek Chak → Kep or Kampot: Kep is about 20 km from the border, Kampot about 35 km, under an hour by minivan.
Through tickets combine the boat, the transfer and the minivan. Booking platforms in October 2026 listed Ha Tien Xanh Travel, Kampot Transports and Kep Express to Kampot and Kep, and the same companies plus Giant Ibis to Phnom Penh, with departures from Phu Quoc between about 7:00 and 14:00:
| From Phu Quoc to | Time, door to door | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Kep | about 3½–5 hours | about US$23–30 |
| Kampot | about 4–5½ hours | about US$23–30 |
| Phnom Penh | about 7–9½ hours | about US$36–49 |
Bookaway listings, seen 16 October 2026. Ask what the ticket includes — the shuttle from the Ha Tien pier, the border handover, and whether the last leg is a minivan or a bus.
The same companies run the route in the other direction, from Kampot and Kep to Ha Tien and on to the Phu Quoc boat; a March 2026 timetable listed about US$12–16 for the land leg from Kampot to Ha Tien.
If you want to see Ha Tien itself — the caves, the Mac Cuu tombs, Mui Nai beach — stay a night: see Ha Tien.
The border: Xa Xia – Prek Chak
- Hours: no official opening hours are published; travel guides give roughly 7:00 to 17:00 or 18:00. Arrive by mid-afternoon.
- Entering Cambodia: Cambodia’s visa on arrival is issued at Prek Chak; the standard tourist visa is US$30, in cash, with a passport photo — some travellers report being asked for more. Cambodia’s e-visa is valid only at a short list of airports and land crossings, and Prek Chak was not on that list in 2025–2026 sources; check Cambodia’s official e-visa site before you rely on one.
- Arrival card: Cambodia’s online e-Arrival card is required for air arrivals; whether it applies at land borders is not clear, so filling it in (it is free) does no harm.
Coming back: the visa rule
The 30-day Phu Quoc visa exemption only works when you arrive on the island from abroad. Crossing from Cambodia at Ha Tien puts you on the Vietnamese mainland, so the exemption does not apply, even if you head straight for the ferry. You need, before you reach the border:
- a Vietnamese e-visa — the Ha Tien international border gate is on the government’s list of e-visa ports; give Ha Tien as your entry point and carry a printout; or
- Vietnam’s own visa exemption for your nationality, if you have one, or another valid visa.
Vietnam does not issue visas on arrival at land borders.
By air
- Phnom Penh – Phu Quoc: Air Cambodia flies direct, about an hour, from Phnom Penh’s Techo International Airport. It launched the route in January 2026 and, according to AeroRoutes, goes up to daily flights from 25 October 2026. Arriving by air from abroad, you can use the Phu Quoc exemption.
- Siem Reap – Phu Quoc: AirAsia Cambodia started flights three times a week in December 2025; check the current schedule before you plan around it.
- Sihanoukville: no direct flights; connect through Ho Chi Minh City or Phnom Penh.
For all flights to the island, see getting to Phu Quoc and Phu Quoc airport.
Is Phu Quoc in Vietnam or Cambodia?
Phu Quoc is part of Vietnam: since 2025 it has been the Phu Quoc Special Zone of An Giang Province. It lies closer to the Cambodian coast than to mainland Vietnam, and in Khmer it is called Koh Tral. Cambodia claimed the island at times in the 20th century; a 1982 agreement between the two countries on historic waters kept the colonial-era line that placed Phu Quoc under Vietnam. For the island’s history, see about Phu Quoc.
